Arlington residents who missed out on the city's October shredding event because of weather now have a second chance.

The City of Arlington has rescheduled its free paper shredding and electronics recycling event to Saturday, October 31, after the original date was scrapped due to bad weather.

The event runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the southeast corner of Mitchell Street and Cooper Street, inside a parking lot on the UTA campus.

Drivers are directed to enter from Doug Russell Road, where city crews and contractors will be staged to handle both shredding and electronics intake.

Weather is the reason this event exists on a second date at all, since a storm front moved through on the originally planned Saturday and forced city staff to call it off rather than risk soaked paperwork and exposed electronics.

Rescheduling an outdoor civic event is never simple, since it means re-booking the same contractors, the same lot and the same staffing window a second time.

There is a catch for anyone hoping to drop off a truckload.

Proof of Arlington residency will be required at the gate, so organizers are asking residents to bring a driver's license, utility bill or similar document showing a local address.

The shredding side of the event is capped at two standard cardboard banker's boxes per vehicle, and the shredding truck will stop taking paper once it reaches capacity for the day.

Residents hoping to clear out old tax paperwork, bank statements or other sensitive documents are being encouraged to arrive early, since the limit applies per vehicle, not per household.

City officials frame events like this as a convenience service and an environmental one at the same time, keeping electronics and their heavy metals out of local landfills while giving residents a secure way to destroy personal paperwork.

Identity theft prevention has become a bigger draw for these events in recent years, as shredding old financial records remains one of the simplest ways residents can protect themselves without paying for a private service.

The October 31 date puts the event on Halloween morning, well before any evening trick-or-treating gets underway, so organizers don't expect the holiday to conflict with turnout.

No registration is required ahead of time, and the event is open on a first-come, first-served basis until either material runs out or the 2 p.m. cutoff hits, whichever comes first.

Residents who can't make the Saturday window are encouraged to check the city's solid waste services for year-round drop-off options for electronics and documents.

For now, this is the one guaranteed free shot at both services before the end of the year.
